George Strait is sometimes referred to as
The King of Country
and is known for being a traditional country and western singer.
Strait lived with his father, who was a teacher and a farmer, as his parents divorced when he was just a child.
He joined a rock and roll band when he was in high school but his interest gradually turned to country music.
In 1971 Strait married a girl he dated in high school and then joined the military and was posted to Hawaii.
In Hawaii, Strait joined a military-sponsored country band called
Rambling Country
.
He left the army in 1975 and entered university at San Marcos completing a degree program in Agriculture.
During his university years, Strait formed his own band called
Ace in the Hole
.
The band performed in various clubs around Nashville where one evening a representative for MCA Records heard him sing.
George Strait was signed to a recording contract with MCA in 1980 and released his first single,
Unwound
, in 1981 which reached the Top Ten.
By 1983, he was having a tremendows wave of success which continued well into the 90's.
Strait set a record for having a total of 31 number one single hits in succession.
He has also made a foray into movie acting, even having the lead role in
Pure Country
.
Amongst honors and awards Strait has received, he was named the Artist of the Decade in 2009.
The George Strait Country Music Festival was voted the most important tour in the history of country music.
In terms of hit album sales, George Strait ranks only behind Elvis Presley and the Beatles.
